Telling Friends “No”

< 1 minute read

One of the hardest parts about being intentional with your money and trying to be financially wise is having to tell others “no”.

Last week, someone spoke to me about how he’s trying to set his family up for financial success and how it’s hard for him to tell his friends “no” when they ask him to do things. He’d love to go, but he sees a better use for that money.

His friend asked him to go to a Cardinals game, but he quickly realized that the cost would be much more than just the $90 ticket when considering that he’d take his wife, pay to travel to the game, probably pay for food and drinks at the game, etc.

It might have only been a onetime expense, but things like this can quickly add up over time if they become habits.

He went on to mention seeing friends buying new cars, buying new houses, going to dinner multiple times per week, going to the mall every weekend, etc.

He has the money to do those things, but he chooses to use that money as a tool to set his family up for a better future – that’s inspiring to me.
